Pigments & Restorations Study on way

Profile Nuziale di Giovane Dama
Behind each pixel Lumiere Technology (LT) obtains a spectrum. 13 measures generating 65 values. LT team is studying the original pigments of this Profilo and the 18th or 19th centuries restorations made on this vellum, by virtual removals in 25 areas (pixels) without any destructive removal, as LT made it on "the Mona Lisa" or on "the Lady with an Ermine" after digitization.
The study is still on way to adapt LT pigments data base on vellum instead on gesso.
Meanwhile the spectrum obtained by LT digitization reveal
- a mixed-media, black chalk, red chalk, white chalk, with ink for the shadows restorations instead of the original black chalk . Many restorations made "au gout du jour" are on the face, hairs and dress, and here is a first layout to describe how the restorer proceeded.
- The pink (4) of the carnation restored is made with a lead white and "laque de garance".
- The restorations in hairs are made with Red Ocre, wash tint.
- (21) Originally a priori was red tinted with Red Chalk, and is restored with RedOcre.
- The dress (23) is made a priori with ocre, and the dress (24) a priori with a black applied by transparency on the vellum, giving this green-dark color.
In the same time, traditional analysis for datation of the vellum and of some pigments have been ordered in a prestigious research center in Europe.
It is a long way to deliver such information on this matter. Beyond this multispectral scan at such resolution (1600 measures = 1600 pixels/mm2) in the visible and invisible range, a new investigation tool and service can help art historians, conservators, experts and researchers in their authentification studies.
